As Shia Muslims, we hold Imam Ali (AS) to be the first rightful Imam appointed after Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and him and his descendants to be the Prophet's rightful successors, all of them members of the Ahl al-Bayt, the blessed household of the Prophet (PBUH).
Sunni Muslims regard Imam Ali (AS) as the fourth of the Rightly Guided Caliphs. Despite this difference, our faith is deeply rooted in the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his pure progeny, with an emphasis on justice, compassion and the true essence of Islam.
Across the Muslim world, Imam Ali (AS) is respected for his courage, knowledge, faith, honesty, devotion to Islam, deep loyalty to Prophet Muhammad (SAWW), equal treatment of all people and generosity, even in forgiving his defeated enemies. He remains an authority on Quranic commentary, Islamic law and religious thought.
We believe Imam Ali (AS) was the only rightful successor to Prophet Muhammad (SAWW), as the Prophet declared in the last days of his life. Ten years after the Hijrah, the Prophet called people from every region to join him on his last pilgrimage, where he taught them how to perform Hajj correctly and in one way. More than a hundred thousand Muslims gathered with him in Makkah: the first time so many had gathered in one place in his presence.
On the way back from this Farewell Pilgrimage (Hajjatul-Wada'), the Prophet and the crowd reached Ghadir Khumm, near today's al-Juhfah, where people from different regions parted for their homes. There, this verse of the Quran was revealed:
"O Messenger! Convey what has been sent down to you from your Lord. And if you do not, then you have not conveyed His message. And Allah will protect you from the people. Indeed, Allah does not guide the disbelieving people." (Quran 5:67)
The Prophet stopped at Ghadir Khumm in the extreme midday heat, called back those who had gone ahead and waited for those behind. A pulpit (minbar) was made from rocks and camel saddles. He spent about five hours there, three of them on the pulpit, recited nearly a hundred verses of the Quran and gave a long sermon. Part of it, narrated widely by Sunni scholars as well, says:
"It seems the time has come when I shall be called away by Allah, and I shall answer that call. I am leaving with you two precious things; if you hold on to both, you will never go astray after me: the Book of Allah and my progeny, my Ahlul Bayt. The two shall never separate from each other until they come to me at the Pool of Paradise."
Then the Prophet raised the hand of Imam Ali (AS) and said:
"For whoever I am his master (mawla), Ali is his master (mawla)."
